What are we looking for?
The Electrical Engineering/Computer Co-op will be a member of the Welland Engineering team working closely on machine connectivity, controls, and digital manufacturing (Industry 4.0) initiatives across machining and assembly.
Co-op Term: January–April 2026 (open to 8–12 months)
Essential Responsibilities
  • Assisting with the diagnosis, testing, and analysis of electrical components, assemblies, and systems
  • Install and maintain electrical control systems, industrial automation systems, and electrical equipment, including control circuits related to UWB and RFID technology
  • Compile and maintain records documenting engineering schematics, installed equipment, issues found, resources used, and corrective actions performed
  • Build and maintain lightweight Node-RED flows to move machine signals (OPC UA/ EtherNetIP/MQTT) into the machine data collection platform, and expose that data for downstream use
  • Assist with implementing simple Machine Data Collection - CMMS integrations for critical machine events and push closure/status back via APIs and Node-RED
  • Use SQL/Python/Excel to assemble small ETL scripts, sanity-check datasets
  • Collect user requirements and create dashboards for Operations and Management
  • Work with industrial technicians and engineers to understand machining processes and ensure data integrity in reporting
  • Support Technical Operations department with process executions and change management
  • Contributing to process improvement projects, such as Lean and Six Sigma initiatives
Qualifications/Requirements
  • In process of completing degree in a related discipline, such as Electrical Engineering/Electrical technologist or Computer Science
  • Experience working within a manufacturing or automotive setting would be considered an asset.
Desired Characteristics
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with PLC/HMI environments (Allen-Bradley/Siemens/Okuma/Fanuc) and reading ladder/functional diagrams
  • Exposure to machine data collection platforms, ERP/MES, and UWB/RFID is preferred
  • Knowledge of JavaScript/Node.js (Node-RED a plus) is an asset
  • Familiarity with APIs (REST/webhooks) and JSON is an asset
  • Comfortable using AI assistants/copilots (effective prompting, validating outputs against source data)
  • Proficient with Excel/PowerPoint/Word; SharePoint experience is a plus
  • Professional demeanor; customer-service oriented; desire to learn about Maintenance for Manufacturing (MFM)
